Priority & Right of Way

Almost every priority question is testing the same ~9 rules against a different picture. Learn the decision order and you can solve nearly any junction scene.

3 sections8 questions
The decision order (check top to bottom, first match wins)

1. Traffic light or police officer present? → Follow that. It overrides everything below.

2. Stop sign, Give Way sign, or you're leaving a driveway/car park/traffic-calmed area? → You wait for everyone — cars from left, cars from right, cyclists, pedestrians. No exceptions.

3. Are you on a priority road (yellow diamond)? → You outrank side-road traffic, with three sub-traps:

  • Turning left off the priority road? You must let oncoming priority-road traffic go first.
  • If the priority road bends and you follow the bend, you're still "on" it — you outrank anyone continuing straight (they're technically leaving the priority road).
  • Straight-ahead through-traffic always beats turning traffic crossing its path, including trams.

4. Exiting a field/forest track, or a driveway with a dropped kerb? → You always wait, no matter who's coming from where. "Right before left" does not apply to minor paths — catches a lot of people out.

5. Is it a roundabout? → Circulating traffic has priority. You give way entering (marked by a Give Way sign at the entrance).

6. Is a tram involved? → Trams almost always win, even against "right before left" and even against the priority-road bend rule.

7. Plain, unmarked intersection? → Default: right before left. Whoever comes from your right has priority — cars, cyclists, motorbikes, doesn't matter.

Two extra things that show up repeatedly
  • Turning right onto a priority road: don't just check for cars — also check for cyclists or pedestrians running parallel to your right or slightly behind you.
  • Visibility blocked by parked cars at a junction, even if you technically have priority: ease in slowly and carefully rather than asserting right of way blindly.
Quick self-test logic

When you see a junction picture, ask in order: 1) Any signal/police? 2) Any stop/give-way sign or minor-path exit? 3) Priority-road diamond? 4) Roundabout? 5) Tram? 6) Otherwise → right before left.

That's the whole chapter — nearly all 54 questions in this topic reduce to this one flowchart.
